Listen to BBC Radio 4's "You and Yours" piece about the Orchard Centre

Read Patrick Noakes' "Memories of Aspen House School" - a memoir of his time at the open air School in the Orchard Centre.

The Orchard Centre is a unique and beautiful place in the heart of Lambeth - a walled garden in which are set four listed timber chalets, together with a number of support buildings, surrounded with mature trees.

Probably the first purpose built (in 1926) example of an Open Air School (there were upwards of 70 all over the country before WWII, educating children with TB and asthma), anyone who visits the site is struck by its beauty and charm.

The site is currently under threat - offered for sale to the highest bidder by Lambeth Council, who have also applied for plannning permission to split the site in two, and build houses and flats, destroying the setting of the listed buildings and seriously jeopardising their survival.

Friends of the Orchard Centre is an umbrella group bringing together anyone who wants to see the site preserved, kept whole, enhanced and made available for community use.

Please bookmark this website - it will develop over the next week!
